Hi Joanne!
Thank you for taking the time to visit us at Urban Girl Reading. We’re looking forward to chatting about your new release, Tall, Dark and Cowboy. Please tell us a bit about it.
Joanne: Thanks for having me!
Tall, Dark and Cowboy is the story of Lacey Bradford, a former trophy wife raised to wealth and privilege who discovers her ex-husband was a crook. Swearing off his ill-gotten gains, she takes off with nothing but a few dollars and an old broken-down car She’s hoping to get some help from a friend who moved to Wyoming, but she discovers that her old admirer Chase Caldwell doesn’t want to let the girl who broke his heart back in high school back into his life
Lacey’s exhausted her very limited resources, so she’s forced to create a life in Chase’s hometown whether he’ll help her or not. She might not have much in the way of survival skills, but she does her best to make it work—and works her way right into Chase’s hardened heart.
UGR: Is there any special story or idea behind the creation of Tall, Dark and Cowboy?
Joanne: I love stories of starting over. Whenever I drive through a small Wyoming town, I imagine what it would be like to move there and build a whole new life from scratch. Lacey’s story was born out of that fantasy.
UGR: I love the small town aspect that is present in your books. Is Grady based on a real town or is it entirely fictional?
Joanne: Grady is a combination of several small towns in Wyoming, including Chugwater, Meeteetse, Guernsey, and a few others. These towns look pretty bleak when you drive through, but if you stop the people are always friendly. I always feel like I’m stepping back in time when I visit these remote places. Time seems to move more slowly the further you go from civilization.
UGR: Which character did you have the most fun writing about? Do you have a favorite? (Oh, BTW, I absolutely hate Wade! You have made him so despicable that I can’t even read his name without giving myself the creeps).
Joanne: Thank you for hating Wade
My favorite character in the book was Fletcher Galt, Chase’s elderly neighbor. Galt, who lost everything in the world he cared about, is a warning to Chase about what bitterness can do to your heart. Bringing the old man back into the world helps both Chase and Lacey heal, and the way they deal with him tells a lot about who they are and how they’re alike despite their very different life experiences.
UGR: If you had to give Chase and Lacey “theme” songs, what would they be and why?
Joanne: For Chase, who hides a loyal heart under a hard exterior, it’s “Forever and Ever Amen” by Randy Travis (“They say time can play tricks on a memory, make people forget things they knew. Well it's easy to see it's happening to me, I've already forgotten every woman but you…”)
For Lacey, who finds inner resources she didn’t know she had, it’s Lorrie Morgan’s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” (“It's been a long hard fall, but I'll make it after all - I didn't know my own strength”)
Aww. Just singing those in my head makes me miss Chase and Lacey.
UGR: What upcoming projects are you working on and when can your fans expect to look for them?
Joanne: Cowboy Crazy will be in stores in June. It’s about a Wyoming oil heir turned rodeo cowboy who wants to get back to his family’s ranching roots, and a small-town girl who can’t get away from her country roots fast enough. The two of them are running in opposite directions, but when they collide, the sparks fly!
UGR: What genres do you read? Do you have any favorite authors?
Joanne: I read a lot of romance novels. I think it’s very important for writers to read widely in their own genre. (There. Isn’t that a great excuse for reading romance novels? I call it “work” and everybody thinks I’m getting something done, when really I’m having a blast reading wonderful stories by Jodi Thomas and Carolyn Brown. I also love Kristan Higgins, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Jill Shalvis.)
UGR: Anything your fans would be surprised to know about you?
Joanne: I love horses and almost always put them in my books, but I am the most incompetent cowgirl ever. They say it’s hard to fall off a Western saddle, but I can find a way to do it every time. I do have experience with horses but most of it was ground training—for them, and for me!
Quickfire Questions
UGR: Hardcover or paperback books?
Joanne: Paperbacks. I can buy more of them with whatever’s left in my wallet!
UGR: Bookmark or dog ear page turner?
Joanne: Bookmark. I used to be in the used book business, so I can’t beat up a book too much.
UGR: Early bird or night owl?
Joanne: Night owl all the way!
UGR: Coffee or tea?
Joanne: Tea. Chamomile.
UGR:: Chocolate or vanilla?
Joanne: Both, in a hot fudge sundae!
UGR: Plotter or pantser
Joanne: Both again! I plot beginning, middle and end and then pants my way through the details.
UGR: Thank you for joining us today Joanne, we look forward to your next novel.

Urban Girl, thanks for the great interview (I loved the theme song question). And even bigger thanks for letting me know I have four "blooms" coming! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say now that I can stop biting my nails over it. Reviews make me nervous!
November 15, 2011 12:42 AMI'll be out and about quite a bit tomorrow, but I'll stop by as often as I can to check out the comments and answer questions. See you then!
Urban Girl, I don't see the widget...
November 15, 2011 1:36 AMJoanne Kennedy: have u met the model of your book? hotness :D
email: cruz042 at csusm dot edu
I don't see the widget either. I'm guessing rafflecopter ugh this is why I don't like it.
November 15, 2011 2:59 AMOh and yes have you met the cover model? A great cover makes a world of difference but I've found that authors rarely have a say in the cover design. Good or bad?
Great interview I love your questions!! Especially the theme song very unique! Tall, Dark and Cowboy sounds like a great read and that cover is simply gorgeous! :)
November 15, 2011 8:09 AMI don't see the widget either.

Loved this interview! Great questions and the answers...well, the book sounded interesting, but when you started talking about their theme songs - ok, I was hooked. I love that Randy Travis song and I can only imagine what happens in the story. This one is moving to the top of my TBR list.
November 15, 2011 8:34 AMBTW, how DO you fall off a Western saddle?
rrgreene62(at)gmail.com
Oh how I love reading books about cowboys. My family makes fun of me because of it.
November 15, 2011 8:46 AMI would love to win this book. Thank you for the chance to win this. It looks amazing.

wow, that cover is very very nice. The interview was great too but I'm going to focus on the cover because wow.
November 15, 2011 9:41 AMThis sounds like a great read. I love the second chance at romance story line.
November 15, 2011 9:46 AMdebbie at burdeen dot com
Arianne, unfortunately I don't get to meet the models:( But it's okay - I have a hot husband for inspiration;)
November 15, 2011 11:14 AMJessica, they always send me the covers "for approval" but they do such a great job I rarely ask for changes. And I love this one!
Thanks, Miranda! I hope you enjoy it.
Rebecca, thanks! I love that song too, and it fits Chase so well.
As for the falling off--I don't know how it happens! Suddenly, the horse is just gone, and I'm on the ground.
agent beckster (I love that handle!), good luck in the drawing! And hey, there's no shame in loving cowboys!
Patricia, I think this must be my best cover ever, judging from reader responses:)
Orchid, I like the second chance storyline too. And it's not just love Lacey needs a second chance at; she's really starting over from scratch.
I love the cover. The model is Hot but I like the landscape! I love Randy Travis too! That sealed the deal! I definately have to read your book!! Thanks! brendem7@comcast.net
November 15, 2011 11:57 AMSorry guys, looks like a < got left off when I copied the script over.
November 15, 2011 12:26 PMEveryone to this post will receive 4 entry points for the book giveaway that should be fair. Sorry abou the confusion and thanks for posting about it.
BTW - I recently saw another giveaway widget being used and it looked REALLY easy. You only had to enter your name and email. Now I can't figure out where I saw it or what the name is. Anyone??
@JoanneKennedy - Laughed when I read your note about the theme song question. I love that question also and you are the first author I have asked it to
Joanne sounds like she has a very varied background. If those types of experiences are incorporated into her books, they sound like they will be very engaging.
November 15, 2011 6:32 PMsallans d at yahoo dot com
Brenda, I love the landscape too. I spent all day with my husband driving the backroads and visiting a bunch of Wyoming small towns - La Grange, Yoder, Veteran, Albin, and even the thriving metropolis of Torrington! Now I'm ready to write some more... and I'll have photos and stories posted on my facebook page and on my website in the "for readers" department in a few days.
November 15, 2011 8:43 PMSherri, I'm glad you figured out the widget! I'm terrible with tech stuff, so I'm impressed.
And I think theme songs should be a regular question you ask all the authors! It made me think, but it was fun figuring them out.
Di, I've started over a few times in life myself, and all those experiences are incorporated into my stories. I never felt very focused in my life, but having a variety of life experience turns out to be a good thing when you sit down to write a novel.
Joanne, I 'll also say not only did the cover blow me away, it's gorgeous but I enjoyed thew interview and the summary for the book. Thanks for the opportunity.
November 16, 2011 6:56 AMAnd Sherri, I know what you're talking about but I can't remember the blog that you only entered your name and email. It'll come to me :)

I enjoyed the interview very much. I too enjoy starting over stories. I'm kind of starting over myself now. I lost my home in the EF5 tornado that hit Joplin MO. back on 5/22. So I really know what it's like to begin again. I look forward to reading your book.

November 17, 2011 10:28 PMI am starting something new sort of, the next 50 years of my life, so it is sort of like starting over again. My kids are grown and I am single and alone again for the first time in a while, to start a new life..this may be a good read for me
sweetpea0861@yahoo.com
Joanne, I agree about reading, reading, reading as part of your work. I think you need to do a lot of it to support the good work writers already do. At least, that's my excuse, too.
November 18, 2011 12:45 PMThanks for the giveaway! Gloria

November 20, 2011 2:04 PMjwitt33 at live dot com
Forever & Ever Amen is my favorite Randy Travis song. That you consider it the theme song for Chase, is so cool. Thanks for the opportunity to cross Tall, Dark & Cowboy off my books to buy list, without having to go broke.
