How Can We Be Lovers If We Can’t Be Friends?

by Megan Slayer

I want to thank Urban Girl Reader for welcoming me to the blog and for having me. This is a great blog! I’m having a blast.

The topic I was given was the idea of friends becoming lovers. I’ve been told it’s a well-worn trope in literature. Lots of authors write about characters that started out as friends and end up as lovers. I have this to say, it is up to the author to interpret it in a fresh way, but at the same time authors write what they know. Who doesn’t know someone who started out as friends and ended up taking things a little farther? I know people like that.

DH and I are those people.

Here’s our story. We met in college. Talked a lot and laughed even more. I thought he was so sexy and so mature. He probably thought I was goofy. I was. Imagine, I had red and blonde hair (back then I’d already started experimenting with hair color and trying new things), wore mostly flannel and dragged around a gigantic art portfolio. We got lunches together and just enjoyed being around each other. Then another friend said, “Oh for God’s sake, just kiss already and get it over with.”

Shocked? Yeah, and dumbfounded. He was my friend. Could it be more? Eleven years of marriage later, I guess it could be more. I love it and I’m glad we ‘just kissed already.”

Maybe that’s why I like to write the second chance, friends to lovers storyline. I like writing what I’ve been through because I’ve had those feelings and that scary nervousness. I wondered if it would be a gigantic disaster or the best choice.

I also enjoy writing the friends to lovers theme because I love the dance. It’s not like one day they meet and fall into bed (although they might one day fall into bed). They have a history. They know each other and what makes the other laugh/cry/sigh. They have to figure out the balance between drowning in lust and succumbing to the passion they feel for each other. As I write this I’m sighing because it’s fun to see the change and the fire the characters can bring.

I like writing what I lived. Now I ask you in closing, what trope do you just love? Are there subgenres of romance that you can’t pass up? Which ones are you getting tired of and want to see fade a bit? Let me know so we can chatter about it!

Thanks Urban Girl Reader and I can’t wait to be back!

megan_slayerA Little Bit About Megan

When she's not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don't seem to mind.

When she's not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school.

She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love suits her fancy best.

Currently hanging out every Wednesday and Friday at the Menagerie Authors site, hunting Hotties for the Saturday posts, and working on the next great story brewing in her head!

I like most kinds of love stories if they're handled right whether it is friends slowly becoming lovers to the opposite extreme of love at first sight.
The book offers a lot for these friends to work through with one having a very painful experience and trust issues.

Thanks for the post!

I like the friends to lovers type of stories, but I also like the love at first sight and animal attraction stories, which is how I felt when I met my wife. Within a month we were lovers and I couldn't stop thinking about her. The first time I saw her, I wanted to devour her. Recently, I have been reading a lot about sexy women and girls who lust after each other. I'm not to turned on with the male and male type romance. However, the thought of being a cabana boy kind of turns me on. Thanks and good luck with your new books.
